The true story of two men, one of whom would tell the others story. A New York City man in the 1940s writes for the New Yorker and encounters a Harvard-educated bohemian whose life's work is a transcript of hundreds of conversations, remarks and essays about what he has seen and heard. After the writer makes the bohemian a minor celebrity, the dynamics between the two men shift.
